About Everest Base Camp Via Gokyo Lakes Trek

Gokyo Valley Trek is an ideal Everest trekking package to explore the Himalayan panoramas of the Everest range, Sherpa communities and their lifestyles, glaciers, glacial lakes, and Himalayan flora and fauna. It is a wonderful trip that also takes you to the famous lakes in the Everest region.

The mountain views on this trip include Mt. Everest (8,848 m), Cho Oyu (8,188 m), Lhotse (8,414 m), Makalu (8,463 m), Nuptse, Thamserku, and other peaks from Gokyo Ri. Gokyo Ri is one of the highest points of the Gokyo trekking route.

The Gokyo Trek is also popular as the Gokyo Lake Trek or Gokyo Ri Trek in the Everest region. The area is known for its lakes, mountain scenery, monasteries, chortens, mani walls, and prayer flags. These features add a strong cultural side to the trek.

Gokyo Valley Trek Experience

Trekkers on the Gokyo trekking trail can see wildlife such as musk deer, Himalayan thar, snow leopard, pheasants, and snowcocks in Sagarmatha National Park. The route also passes through rhododendron and birch forests.

Because of its lakes, glaciers, mountain views, and high-altitude landscapes, the Gokyo Trek is regarded as an alternative to the popular Everest Base Camp Trekking. Gokyo Ri offers views of the Himalayas, Gokyo Lakes, and Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest glacier in Nepal.

The journey to Gokyo Valley also offers sunrise and sunset views over the snow-covered mountains.

Gokyo Valley Trek Route

The Gokyo Valley Trek begins with a 35-minute Himalayan flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. From Lukla, the trail continues beside the Dudh Koshi River and enters Sagarmatha National Park before reaching Namche Bazaar.

Namche is an important settlement in the Sherpa region and a key place for acclimatization. From Namche, the trail continues towards Dole, Machhermo, and Gokyo Valley. The route then reaches Gokyo Ri, a major viewpoint above the Gokyo Lakes, before retracing the trail back to Lukla.

Travelers looking for a more demanding Everest region trek can also consider the Everest Three Passes route, while those wanting more comfort can choose a Luxury Everest Trek. The classic Everest Base Camp Trek remains another option for reaching the base camp itself.

Gokyo Valley Trek Cost

The Gokyo Valley Trek costs USD 1,300 per person on the full-board package. The regular price is USD 1,595, with the reduced rate available for online booking.

You can book the trek online without card processing fees. The package includes the services listed in the trip inclusions, so you can check exactly what the price covers before booking.

Who is the Gokyo Valley Trek for?

The Gokyo Valley Trek is a good choice for travelers who want to see the Everest region beyond the usual Everest Base Camp route. It suits trekkers who are interested in Gokyo Lakes, Gokyo Ri, Ngozumpa Glacier, Sherpa villages, and high-altitude mountain views.

It also works well for people who have completed other treks and want a higher route. First-time trekkers can take this trek with proper preparation and acclimatization. The route suits couples, friends, families with fit members, and older travelers who are comfortable with long walking days.

Despite some areas, there is network coverage of mobile phone in almost the places. The landline phones are also available for the communication. Electricity or solar powers are available for the mobile charge. It is better to have a spare battery.

Gokyo Lakes Trek Difficulty

The Gokyo Lakes Trek becomes physically demanding as the trail reaches higher elevations. The climb from Dole to Machhermo has long uphill sections, while the route from Machhermo to Gokyo at 4,790 m can feel harder because of the thinner air. The early morning climb to Gokyo Ri (5,330 m) is another demanding section. The trail is steep and rocky, and the cold can make the climb feel harder. The route also crosses Cho La Pass (5,420 m), where snow, ice, and uneven ground can slow the walk.

Health Issues

It is better to consult with your doctor before going to the Gokyo Lakes trekking . Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)/ High Altitude Sickness can occur during the trekking so proper acclimatization is needed. Please, take your required medicine with you.

Permits for Gokyo Lakes Trek

The Gokyo Lakes Trek requires the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit. Good Vibe Adventure arranges both permits as part of the trekking package. You need to carry your passport during the trek because permit and checkpoint details may be checked along the route.

Insurance/Rescue

Insurance help you to get a quick rescue and the medical expenses. It is an expensive operation from the higher altitude in helicopter. It cuts your economic burden if some accidents happen. Insurance should be done by you.

Best Trekking season for the Gokyo Lakes Trekking

Autumn and spring are the best seasons for Everest Base Camp Trekking. Days are warm and nights are chilling. Mornings are usually clear and fine weather. It can be cloudy around the afternoon and evening. The winter season is more challenging due to the heavy snow fall.

Currency and Money

The currency in Nepal is the Nepali Rupee (NPR). You can withdraw cash in Namche Bazaar, which is the last reliable place to manage your cash before heading deeper into the Gokyo Valley.

After Namche, cash becomes more important. You may need it for hot showers, charging, Wi-Fi, snacks, drinks, and other personal expenses at the teahouses. Carry enough Nepali Rupees before leaving Namche.

    “Great service by gva”

Went on a trip at the beginning August with only a rough idea of what we wanted to do. Good Vibe helped us to settle all the bookings with great efficiency and service, at a reasonable price. They were not pushy and listened to what we wanted before giving their suggestions. Glad to have met them on the trip! Would definitely recommend them to all.
