The Numbur Cheese Circuit is for the ambitious trekker looking for a mountain challenge. This route was jointly developed by the Ramechap Economic Development Forum and the U.N.s International Labor Organization and opened in October 2009 by the Nepal Tourism Board.
We take you into remote valleys at the foot of the Himalaya rich in astonishing views and cultural experiences. Thirteen seasonal cheese-making centers where you can try yak cheese on this route. A Swiss-designed factory at Thodung was established in 1957 with Thodung monastery a short hike south of the cheese factory.
The Numbur Cheese Circuit is within one of Nepal's newly protected areas, the Gauri-Shankar Conservation Area, formally declared at a cabinet meeting held at Kala Pattar in December 2009.
The area borders the Everest regions and follows the Khimti and Likhu rivers. Several high passes cross along the way among which Gyajo La 4880m (16,010 feet), PanchPokhari 4605m (15,108 feet) and a nearby collection of five small lakes. The name of this trek is derived from Numbur Peak 6959 m (22831 feet), an unclimbed peak that is the protector deity of Solu, the area to the immediate east.
Gauri-Shankar 7150 m (23,459 feet) is also unclimbed, and permits are not issued for this sacred mountain. It is named after the God-couple Parvati, also known as Gauri, and Shiva, also known as Shankar. Gauri-Shankar was thought at one time to be the highest summit in the world because of its visibility from afar. This trek provides a unique southeastern view of Gauri-Shankar. Two trekking peaks of Pharchamo (20,298 feet, 6187 m) and Ramdung (19,438 feet, 5925 m) also stand out with its Himalayan landscape.
During this trek, you'll enjoy mountain vistas, terraced fields, deep gorges, glaciers, glacial lakes and a chance to see rare wildlife. As usual, the trails are full of rhododendron flowers in the springtime. It's quite an adventure.
The Numbur Cheese Circuit Trek is a camping tour. Facilities in the region after a certain point are not capable of supporting a tea house or lodge to lodge trek. We will have a crew of porters to carry all supplies, including a dining tent, tables, chairs, bathroom tent and personal, comfortable sleeping tent. Our cook will provide quality meals and the evening around the camp will be a cozy time recollecting the wonders of the day's journey and spectacular surroundings over a good meal and a warm drink.
