This world-famous trekking route follows the journey to Everest Base Camp taken by the famous mountaineers Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. They summit Mount Everest for the first time in 1953. The trek passes through beautiful, fertile foothills up to the alpine landscape of the Khumbu. The climax of the trip will be getting as close as possible to the world's highest mountain without being a climber and direct views of the legendary Khumbu Icefall. Another main attraction is one of the best viewpoints on earth, Kala Pattar (4250 m, 13,945 ft), with a panorama of Everest and the beautiful Himalayan Range and the glacier valley below the peaks.
Along the way, to and from our lodge in Gorak Shep, we will have tremendous views of mountains and high valleys that are considered sacred to the people that live there. Sherpa is renowned for its climbing achievements and the route to Base Camp passes through many of their traditional villages. The people living in the region follow a customary way of life and the Jiri to Everest Base Camp trip will offer a chance to witness this Sherpa homeland and visit majestic Buddhist monasteries.
We begin in Kathmandu with an exciting tour of the Valley and its World Heritage Sites and markets. Then, we enjoy a long, scenic drive to the starting point of our trek, Jiri, a market town in a beautiful valley at the gateway to the Solu-Khumbu region. The trek heads east through several bountiful valleys and high passes before reaching the Dudh Kosi valley. We follow this river valley north following to Namche Bazaar, at the doorstep of the Khumbu Region. The settlement is on a plateau overlooking the valley with mesmerizing views of the surrounding mountains. The journey to Base Camp continues with a visit to the regal Tangboche monastery, one of the favorite places of the whole trek, surrounded by beautiful peaks.
The land becomes more deserted with less vegetation as we make our way closer and closer to the top summit on earth. Finally, we achieve our aim of Base Camp and Kala Pattar, the highpoint and the great satisfaction that goes with the accomplishment. We enjoy the moment and the extraordinary views and eventually begin a relaxed journey back to Namche Bazaar and a flight from Lukla. We will have some time in Kathmandu to explore more of the city's mysteries and shop for souvenirs and gifts before being ushered to the international airport for your return flight home.
Our Jiri to Everest Base Camp trek includes regular departure dates from Kathmandu and custom treks can be organized to fit your own convenient schedule. There are numerous options for more exploration in the Everest area if you would like to extend your travels here.
