Visit Kathmandu Durbar Square

After meeting your guide and driver, you will begin your sightseeing tour with Kathmandu Durbar Square, located in the heart of the old city.The square was once the royal center of the former Kathmandu Kingdom. Today, it is known for its historic palace buildings, temples, courtyards, and  traditional Newari craftsmanship. As you walk around the complex, you will see how wood carvings, brickwork, and pagoda style temples have shaped the city's architecture over the centuries.

You can also visit Hanuman Dhoka Palace and see Kumari Ghar, the residence of the Living Goddess Kumari. If you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of Kumari during an appearance at the window, although this is not guaranteed. Take some time to look around the square and its surrounding streets. There are small shops, local vendors, and traditional buildings nearby that give you a glimpse of everyday life in the old city.

Explore Swayambhunath Stupa

Next, you will head towards Swayambhunath Stupa, which sits on a hill to the west of central Kathmandu. The site is one of the valley's most recognizable Buddhist landmarks and is also known as the Monkey Temple because of the monkeys that live around the complex.

The main stupa has a white dome, a golden spire, and the famous Buddha eyes painted on its four sides. Around it, you will find prayer wheels, small shrines, temples, and religious statues. Both Buddhist and Hindu devotees visit this site. If you take the traditional staircase to the top, be prepared for a climb. Once you reach the main complex, you can explore the surroundings and enjoy views across Kathmandu Valley. On clear days, you can see much of the city from here.

Visit Pashupatinath Temple

Your tour continues to Pashupatinath Temple, located beside the Bagmati River. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is one of the most sacred Hindu temples in Nepal and attracts devotees from different parts of the country and beyond. The main temple features a traditional pagoda style roof and intricate architectural details. Non Hindu visitors cannot enter the main temple building, but they can explore designated areas around the complex and observe the religious activities from permitted viewpoints.

Along the river, you may see Hindu cremation rituals taking place at the ghats. These ceremonies are part of local Hindu funeral traditions, so visitors should observe respectfully and avoid taking photographs where they are not permitted. If you visit during the Maha Shivaratri festival, the temple area becomes especially busy with pilgrims and religious gatherings. Your guide can explain the significance of the temple and the traditions associated with it.

Explore Boudhanath Stupa

The final major stop is Boudhanath Stupa, one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Kathmandu Valley. Its large white dome and golden tower are surrounded by monasteries, shops, cafes, and buildings associated with the local Tibetan Buddhist community. As you walk around the stupa, you will see pilgrims turning prayer wheels, spinning prayer beads, and walking clockwise around the monument. This ritual walk, known as kora, is an important part of Buddhist practice.

You can also explore the surrounding streets, visit nearby monasteries where access is permitted, or take a break at a rooftop cafe overlooking the stupa. Boudhanath is a good place to end your sightseeing day because you can spend some time observing the local atmosphere before returning to your hotel.

Return to Your Hotel

After visiting the four heritage sites, your driver will take you back to your hotel in Kathmandu. The exact finishing time depends on traffic, the time spent at each attraction, and the order of the visits.

Although one day does not cover every cultural site in Kathmandu Valley, this tour gives you a useful introduction to its history, architecture, and religious traditions.
